Last year, I struggled with one of the biggest decisions of my life thus far: should I do Running Start, or should I stay in high school for the last two years? I found myself questioning my maturity, my relationships, and my academic abilities. After talking it over with family and friends, I eventually chose to embark into the unknown, and I enrolled at Cascadia College as a full-time Running Start student. This path called to me as someone with a love of learning, as a student who was eager to experience something different from the typical, exhausting high school day-by-day.
This was a choice that I don’t regret. Throughout my junior year, I have grown as a student, a friend, a writer, and expanded my understanding of education and its meaning. With a flexible schedule and only three courses at a time, I was able to explore my hobbies further, dedicate more time to each class, and form new connections. The atmosphere at Cascadia is very open; despite being a small establishment, it feels much larger than WHS. This gave me a sense of freedom that I relished; a feeling of independence and confidence. I was able to manage my academic progress on my own terms, and was surrounded by like-minded peers who also sought the autonomy and creativity that higher education inspires.
Now, of course, community college cannot offer the breadth and quality of learning that can be found at a four-year university like UW, but the wide variety of classes, and the quick pace of each course, is an invigorating change from the five days a week, seven classes a day schedule. I especially enjoyed my English classes, and eventually found a job as a writing tutor at the college’s Learning Center. This was an extremely fulfilling position, one which I will continue in the summer and in the upcoming academic year. Not only did I improve my writing skills, but I also learned valuable lessons in patience, acceptance, and communication.
For those who enjoy a packed schedule and constant social interaction, the high school environment might be better suited for you. But for those with a more introverted personality, or who are looking for a fresh start and an introduction to the college experience, I highly recommend Running Start. Doing part-time usually causes scheduling problems, but it can be done. Full-time will allow you to complete your Associates’ Degree, essentially shortening your post-high school college time by two years. For anyone who is confident in their field of study, or is planning to go to UW or another Washington university, Running Start is an incredible option. And, it’s completely free!
Some tips for those considering: plan out each of your quarters, and remember to ask the Running Start counselor, My Tang, any questions! Colleges operate on a slightly different schedule than high school. Also, keep in mind that parking on college campuses does require a fee. Lastly, I recommend joining clubs and attending events, because this is the best way to become acquainted with your new environment.
Running Start isn’t for everyone, but is a very rewarding path for many that chose it. I highly recommend this early college experience to any high school students looking for a change.
