Ruthu Mavnur (she/her)
Ruthu Mavnur is a senior and the former President of Journalism Club. She is thrilled to continue leading the team of WoodinvilleNow with the officer team. Along with Journalism, she’s on the exec board for five other clubs. Outside of passion for advocacy and current news, she loves to hang out with loved ones, drink chai, and travel to new places. Her favorite ice cream is anything chocolate. She looks forward to working with staff to produce high-quality and interesting pieces of work this year!
Ava Wahl (she/her)
Ava Wahl is a junior and President of Journalism Club. She loves to use her passion for writing and communication to help run this club, and hopes to inspire a love of journalism and language in others. Ava also enjoys playing guitar, weightlifting, watching period dramas, and studying politics. Her favorite flavor of ice cream is dark chocolate raspberry. She can’t wait to see how Journalism Club will continue to blossom and grow this year!
Humphrey Huang (he/him)
Humphrey Huang is a Junior and the WoodinvilleNow Website Lead Developer this year. His favorite subjects are math, science and computer science, specifically in areas of calculus, physics, and web development. He explores these areas of interests by taking a variety of AP courses, and contributing after school through multiple club officer positions. In his free time, he likes to play ping pong and eat a wafer-style vanilla ice cream cone. He joined Journalism Club to pursue web development and unbiased journalism. He is looking forward to publishing high quality articles and developing the WoodinvilleNow website further this year!
Jude Baer (they/them)
Jude Baer is a sophomore and Vice President of Journalism Club. They are so excited to be on the executive board this year, along with Poetry club, of which they are co-president. They love writing, and is very interested in pop culture and politics, so journalism is a perfect fit for them! Outside of WoodinvilleNow, they play bass guitar in Jazz Band and cello in Orchestra. They also enjoy playing DND with their friends, talking about politics, and writing poetry. Their favorite ice cream flavor is cookie dough, but only when the chunks are left in.
Julia Kary (she/her)
Julia is a Senior at Woodinville High School. She is the treasurer and a writer for Journalism Club. Aside from Journalism she is also part of Japanese Club, FBLA, HOSA, Hiking Club and the GSA. Her favorite class is Health Science Careers. Outside of school, Julia loves to play badminton, read, and spend time with friends. Her favorite genres are fantasy and science fiction. Her favorite flavor of ice cream is mint moose tracks. She is excited to improve Journalism’s finance this year.
Avery Cherry (she/her)
Avery Cherry is a sophomore at Woodinville High School. She is very excited to be the Secretary of Journalism Club this year. Outside of school she enjoys reading, writing, baking and annoying her siblings by practicing for band. Her favorite ice cream flavor is cookie dough. She is very creative and ready to put forward her best work this year. Both her love of writing and inquisitorial personality led her right up to journalism’s door.
Dan Baerwald (he/him)
Dan Baerwald is a junior and the football sideline reporter for WoodinvilleNow. He is involved in National Honor Society and plays baseball in the spring. Journalism interests Dan because it gives him a platform to distribute information to people who otherwise may not be able to find it, and helps build school spirit. In his free time, Dan plays the piano, lifts weights, reads, and volunteers in his local community. Dan’s favorite ice cream flavor is cookies and cream.
Hunter Darnall (he/him)
Hunter is a sophomore, and he joined Journalism Club to practice sports photography and get his shots in the newspaper. He hopes to contribute artful pictures that tell important stories and make people think. In school, he is interested in Advanced photography and AP Chem. In his free time he likes to cook and lift. His favorite ice cream flavor is coffee.
Snow Wang (she/they)
Snow is in 9th grade and has been interested in journalism since she was 10 years old. She is also a student, artist, and activist. Her interests (what she covers) includes Foreign Countries and Cultures, the US, Cultural and World Issues, Women’s Issues, and fact checking.
Snow joined because she thinks of journalism as reporting and educating about what happens in the world.. It is also a great way to keep up with your interests, like when your favorite sports team won or when your favorite author published a new book. Snow is fluent in both English and Chinese Mandarin. She doesn’t have a favorite ice cream flavor, but her cat is a professional soccer player.
Mason Jenks (he/she/they)
Mason is a sophomore at lovely WHS. They enjoy writing stories and sleeping. Journalism is one of the first clubs they joined because of a false assumption that we made actual newspapers, misunderstanding that Woodinville does not have a printing press. Nevertheless, the club has allowed for great opportunities and exploring potential interest in the career. Their favorite ice cream is cookie dough.
Darren Smith (he/him)
Darren is a Junior at Woodinville High School, where he plays jazz guitar for the WHS Jazz Ensemble. Throughout the year, he teaches sailing at the Center for Wooden Boats. Ms. Traxler, the club advisor, is one of Darren’s favorite teachers at Woodinville, and after being introduced to analyzing news articles and different media in an English class, he was inspired to write his own articles. His favorite ice cream is the Dairy Queen Royal Cheesecake Blizzard.
Alice Fuetes (they/them)
Alice is a sophomore, and they are interested in manga, Edgar Allan Poe, The Onceler, and medical science! They joined the Journalism Club this year because they wanted to tell people about what is going on in the world and in Woodinville. Alice is also involved in Math Club, Band (they play flute), and Japanese Club, as the president. Their favorite ice cream flavor is pineapple.
Joseph Luebbert (he/him)
Freshman Joseph Luebbert is a huge video game enthusiast who enjoys all genres, from RPG’s to VR titles. Some of his favorites are Disco Elysium, Into The Radius, and Portal 2. He has been writing short stories since elementary school, inspired by many types of media, mainly books and movies. Joseph chose Journalism to find some inspiration for writing his own novels, as well as to improve his writing overall. His favorite ice cream flavor is rainbow sherbet.
Molly Hakkarainen (she/her)
Molly Hakkarainen is a sophomore at WHS, and is very excited to be a part of Journalism this year. Molly swims on the Woodinville swim team in the fall and enjoys baking, writing poetry, reading, and painting in her free time. She joined Journalsm because it gives her a set time and space to write. Her favorite ice cream flavor is very dependent on the day in question and the options available.
Morgan Hanna (they/them)
Morgan is a sophomore at Woodinville and enjoys many forms of art, including writing, stained glass, and knitting in their free time. Academically, they are interested in topics such as chemistry, language/world studies, nursing, and government/politics. They also enjoy weightlifting and cross country. Morgan joined Journalism because they want to do more to open their own eyes and the eyes of others to issues around the world. Morgan hopes to gain a better understanding of PR and media work, while also sharing the gift of valid information to our school community.
